Supported Wide-Angle Seated Forward Bend (Upavistha Konasana)

The point of this pose is not to stretch but to open the hamstrings and lower back, so all modifications should be made with comfort in mind. Forward bending postures quiet the organs of digestion and elimination, such as the stomach, intestines, and liver. This pose can be held for up to ten minutes and can be seen in Figures 7.30 and 7.31.

Precautions

Some individuals do not find forward folds restorative, instead they find them to be quite unpleasant. If their primary discomfort comes from tight hamstrings, this can be modified, as noted below. Check in with your client about their comfort in the pose.
